The Colby Community College Lady Trojans volleyball team took sole possession of first
place in the Jayhawk Conference after sweeping the Seward County Saints Wednesday night at the Colby Community Building, 25-23,
25-19 and 25-19. The victory marks CCC’s seventh straight in the conference.
Seward controlled most of the first set but Colby, after falling behind 20-16, tied
the score at 21 and went on to win 25-23. The Lady Trojans did not trail again.
Colby jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set. Seward went on a run and cut the
score to 14-11, but that was as close they would get. CCC withheld the charge and
went on to a 25-19 win.
The third set was a near repeat, with CCC running out in front 7-1. Seward got as
close as one point two different times before Colby ended the match, 25-19.
CCC had key performances from several players. Sophomore libero Maja Jankovic, last
week’s conference co-player of the week with teammate Alexasandra Malek, had a game-high
16 digs. Freshman Melanie Loiseau tallied 11 in addition to her 31 assists.
Malek led Colby with 14 kills while sophomores Singryd Valladares had eight and Laura
Funk contributed six. Loiseau, Malek and Jankovic also reeled off three aces each.
The Lady Trojans (15-4 overall, 7-1 KJCCC) have a quick turnaround as they host a
non-conference 6 p.m. game against Northeastern Junior College Friday night at the
Colby Community Building.
