Dubbed “the explainer” by Wired magazine, Michael Wesch will be the featured speaker at Colby Community College on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in the Cultural Arts Center. The public is invited to attend the talk which is part of annual in-service activities at the college.

Wesch is a cultural anthropologist exploring the effects of new media on society and culture. After studying the implications of writing on a remote indigenous culture in the rain forest of Papua New Guinea, he turned his attention to the effects of social media and digital technology on global society. His videos on culture, technology, education and information have been viewed over 20 million times, translated in over 20 languages and are frequently featured at international film festivals and major academic conferences worldwide.

Dr. Wesch is associate professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University. He graduated summa cum laude from the KSU Anthropology Program in 1997. He returned as a faculty member in 2004 after receiving his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Virginia.
The Fairbury, Neb., native is a multiple award-winning teacher active in the development of innovative teaching techniques.
