Colby Community College Art Instructor Rebel Jay has announced that Jerry Hill will be the featured artist at the monthly Studio Friday event scheduled for September 5.
Hill is a 65-year-old farmer whose fascination with rocks and minerals developed into hobbies related to jewelry making. He has faced gems for 12 years, occasionally competitively, and is a certified pre-master cutter with the United States Faceters Guild.
The need for finding ways of displaying cabochon semi-precious gems led him and his spouse Sandy to the art of wire wrapping and that led to chainmaille work.
Hill facets only colored stones using classic as well as modern designs by several of the recent designers. He also does some of his own design work using computer-assisted design, which simplifies the math required to allow light to refract correctly through the gem.
Everyone is invited to attend Studio Friday. Hill will be demonstrating his skills from 9 a.m.-12 noon and from 1-3 p.m. in the Art Room located in Ferguson Hall. He will be shaping rocks, stones and jewels and will demonstrate the equipment he uses while making jewelry. There is no charge to attend this day-long event.
