Colby Community College announced the addition of Jacob Lawson as the institution’s new assistant athletic director and sports information director. Lawson officially joined the Trojan Athletic Department on June 2 and has already begun making an impact.
A native of San Diego, Calif., Lawson brings a strong background in collegiate athletics to the position. He most recently served as the sports information graduate assistant at Fort Hays State University from August 2023 until May 2025, when he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and a minor in business.
“We are extremely excited to see the direction that the department will go in with the addition of Jacob,” said Athletic Director Kenny Hernandez. “Jacob fits our culture of self-starters, hard workers, and creating a positive environment for our student-athletes.”
In addition to his time at Fort Hays State, Lawson gained experience as a full-time communications intern with the University of Kansas during the spring of 2023. His expertise includes statistics, gameday operations, and sports communication, making him a versatile addition to the athletic department.
"I'm excited to join an institution that values both athletic and academic excellence," Lawson said. "Colby Community College has a strong sense of community and pride, and I'm looking forward to contributing to that culture by helping tell the stories of our student-athletes and teams."
As the department's first-ever full-time assistant athletic director, Lawson will support all 14 varsity Trojan programs. He expressed enthusiasm for building relationships across campus and strengthening the college’s athletic communication efforts.
"I'm looking forward to getting to know the coaches, student-athletes, and staff, and building strong relationships across campus," he said. "I'm also excited to hit the ground running with game day coverage, digital content, and creating a consistent voice for Trojan Athletics."
As the Colby Trojans enter the 2025-26 academic year with high expectations for continued success at the national level, supporters, fans, and the campus community can expect increased communication and engagement from the athletic department.
“We’ll strive to keep fans connected and proud of what’s happening in Trojan Athletics,” Lawson added.
