COLBY – Colby Community College is excited to announce Joseph Cornejo as the school's fifth head men's wrestling coach. Cornejo officially started on April 17 and is preparing for the 2024-2025 season.
Cornejo brings 11 years of college coaching experience, recently serving as an assistant coach at Cowley College in Arkansas City for four seasons (2018-2022). While at Cowley, Cornejo coached six All-Americans, including the program's first national champion. Cowley also produced three Academic All-Americans during Cornejo's time with the program.
Cornejo started his college coaching career at Midland University from 2011 to 2018, where he assisted with the men's and women's wrestling programs. The men had 24 All-Americans and two national champions over the seven seasons. Coach Cornejo also started a freestyle and Greco team, Mud Dogs, that ranged from college, high school, and school-age wrestlers in the area.
"I was interested in the Colby wrestling program because I know it has a rich tradition," Cornejo stated. "What I have to bring to the table as a head coach will help bring Colby wrestling back to the top where we belong."
When asked what excites Cornejo about his first year, he stated, "In year one, I am looking forward to putting my roots down as a head coach and getting everything in line to be a successful wrestling program in the classroom and on the mat."
The Trojans had one NJCAA national qualifier during the 2023-2024 season and will look to rebuild for next season.
