Distribution of the Farmers to Families Food Box Program for Thomas County will be in the Colby Community College parking lot beginning at 9 a.m. every other Friday through the end of August. Those wanting a box of free produce are asked to enter in the north parking lot. There is no income requirement.
Residents are invited to pick up produce on July 10 and 24, and August 7 and 21 until the boxes are gone.
The program is designed to help three levels of the food chain: farmers, distributors, and families. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) allocated about $3 billion in April for wholesale food distribution centers, which purchase fresh produce, dairy and meat products from local and regional suppliers whose workforce has been significantly impacted by the closure of restaurants, hotels and other food service businesses.
The distribution is coordinated by the Colby United Methodist Church, the Colby Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Colby/Thomas County Chamber of Commerce, the Thomas County Health Department, and Colby Community College.
