Thursday the Colby Community College softball team presented a check to biology instructor Dr. Jeff Sekavec after they organized a fundraiser to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis, the autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. The team began the fundraiser after Sekavec's wife Brittany was diagnosed with MS.

Players distributed orange silicon bracelets with the phrase “family strong” printed between Brittany and Jeff’s name. A suggested donation of $3 per bracelet was collected. The family received a total of $400.

“I am proud of the young ladies for taking the initiative to bring the focus to such a horrible disease,” said head softball coach Steve Kinnett. “For the players to show love and support for the Sekevacs while increasing awareness of MS shows the character of the team.”

Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. The cause of MS is still unknown, and there is no cure. However, treatments can help speed recovery from attacks, modify the course of the disease and manage symptoms.
