DLVNP FAQs
Veterinary Nursing Questions
When do classes start?
Classes begin in January, June, and August.
What does the program cost?
The program requires 22-26 credit hours of prerequisite coursework and 60 credit hours
of program specific coursework. Prerequisite and program specific courses are taken
online through ColbyConnect. DLVNP courses have fees.
If you would like to receive a detailed program expense sheet, please contact Dr.
Jennifer Martin, Program Director, at jennifer.martin@colbycc.edu.
How many credit hours should I take per semester?
Students should complete the program as outlined in the curriculum guide. Students
who wish to enroll in more credit hours per semester than listed on the curriculum
guide or who desire to take a course in the next term while still completing courses
in a lower term will need to seek special approval from the Program Director.
Students should expect to spend at least 3 hours per week per course credit hour studying.
Many successful students will spend 4-6 hours per week per course credit hour studying.
What are the veterinary hospital requirements?
Veterinary hospitals in which students complete the mentorships and veterinary clinical
experiences must meet the requirements set forth by the Distance Learning Veterinary
Nursing Program.
Many students will find it necessary to complete required tasks at more than one veterinary
hospital. Your primary hospital must have at least one licensed veterinarian who
is an AVMA member. Your primary hospital should have most, if not all, of the required
equipment and have staff members who have the time and expertise to assist you in
completing the essential skills.
Where do I order textbooks?
Students should order textbooks a few weeks prior to the start of class to ensure
delivery by the first day of class. Students may purchase textbooks online via the Trojan Trading Post.
How are exams proctored?
Exams are proctored to make sure that the student is not using unauthorized materials
on examinations including websites and textbooks. The proctor also ensures that the
student is doing his/her own work without outside assistance, and maintains overall
exam security.
Examples of acceptable proctor sites include college or universities, K-12 schools,
public libraries, military bases, educational service centers, commercial learning
and/or testing centers, and RP Now. Those excluded from proctoring include family,
relatives, employers, supervisors, co-workers, neighbors, friends, high school students/work
study, and college athletic department staff.
What is Canvas?
Canvas is a Learning Management System used by students enrolled in online courses
at Colby Community College. Online courses are published in Canvas.
What is ePortal?
ePortal is an online gateway that is used to access your CCC Google email account,
Canvas, Trojan Web, and the CCC Help Desk. ePortal is accessed by clicking on the
ePortal link, located on the lower left side of any CCC webpage.
What is Trojan Web?
Trojan Web is a secure website that CCC students use to enroll in classes, order transcripts,
and view official midterm and final grades.
What are the Technology Requirements?
The Distance Learning Veterinary Nursing Program uses Canvas as its course management system. To access Canvas, college email accounts, and other web-based applications, students are required to have a computer with a reliable high-speed Internet connection. A webcam and headset with a microphone are also required. Mentorship courses will also require a video camcorder or a smartphone (must be less than four years old with an excellent quality camera capable of clear video and close-up zoom capabilities and excellent sound quality) and tripod for use when recording hands-on AVMA essential skills. The Canvas Minimum System Requirements are meant to serve as a guideline for what is acceptable to access most courses using technology. Be aware that some courses may utilize more advanced technologies, and the Minimum System Requirements may be limiting.
Read through the list of technical requirements.
The student’s computer must have a CD/DVD drive and a monitor capable of displaying
800 x 600 resolutions or better. A resolution of 1024 x 768 is recommended.
