Associate of Arts
The Associate of Arts in English is designed for the student intending to transfer and complete a bachelor's degree in an English area.
Composition prepares students for the art and practice of writing. This includes English Composition I, English Composition II, and Creative Writing—three credit hour courses designed for transfer and vocational students. To prepare students for college-level Composition, developmental reading and writing courses are offered: Fundamentals of Reading and Writing and English Composition I Workshop.
ACT, SAT, Accuplacer, high school GPA or previous college courses determine placement in these courses. Developmental courses do not apply toward transfer or graduation.
Related Employment Fields
There are many career choices for an English major. In educational settings, the student may choose to become a teacher, an administrator, or a writer/ researcher. The fields of law and medicine also have career opportunities available. In business or industry, the student may become an editor, technical writer, communications officer, marketing manager, personal manager, or public relations officer. The federal government offers such careers as adjudication specialist, public information specialist, research assistant, technical information specialist, writer/editor, copy editor, editorial supervisor, advertising assistant/supervisor, and copywriter.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics cites the following job growth to 2031 in fields that may be available to those with a background in studying English coursework:
- Employment of writers and authors (4%).
- Employment of lawyers (10%).
- Employment of education administrators, K-12 (6%).
- Employment of postsecondary teachers (12%).
